Assistive Technology for Accessing Computers and Mobile Devices

Learning Outcomes

  • Give examples of low-tech adaptations for computer use.
  • Describe the major types of alternative keyboards and the characteristics of students for whom each type would be appropriate.
  • Explain head-pointing systems and eye-gaze technology, and describe characteristics of students for whom each type would be appropriate.
  • Describe single-switch scanning, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using it as an access method.
  • Describe the various alternative input and output devices that make computers and mobile devices accessible for students with visual impairments and blindness.

This blog presents special technology for accessing computer and mobile devices that covers the full range of the assistive technology continuum, beginning with low-tech tools. This is the point at which technology consideration should begin, progressing to mid-tech and high-tech solutions only if a student’s needs remain unmet. This PowerPoint presents only suggestions or guidelines.
